Riaan Matthys

Riaan Matthys graduated from the University of the Free State with a B.Com (Accounting) degree in 2002 and later completed a two-year, part-time Honours degree in Quantity Surveying from the same institution in 2007. He is a registered professional member of the South African Council of Quantity Surveyors (PrQS) and the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (MRICS).

With 17 years of experience from both consultant and contractor perspectives, Riaan has worked as a quantity surveyor on major engineering, infrastructure, and mining projects. His expertise spans the full spectrum of quantity surveying services, including civil works, mechanical and piping installation, and electrical and instrumentation installation for both main projects and enabling/site preparation works.

His scope of work includes site assessments, measurements, valuations, certifications, and progress reporting. He is responsible for financial reporting, cost estimations, and contractual correspondence with contractors. Additionally, he has played a key role in guiding and overseeing junior quantity surveyors in their daily activities.

In procurement, Riaan has managed tender processes from document assessment and bid adjudication to contract compilation and execution. He has led bid clarification meetings, prepared adjudication reports with recommendations, and facilitated contractor bonding and contract signing.

In planning, he has contributed to project controls by updating and optimizing schedules, including Pre-Feasibility, Feasibility, and Master Schedules for projects such as the Tweefontein Optimization Project and the Channel Tunnel Rail Link. His work has incorporated cost cash flow forecasting and resource allocation to support effective cost control.

In project controls, Riaan has provided forecasting and cost estimation to ensure accurate reporting of final project costs versus actual expenditures. He has also monitored planned vs. actual progress, including Earned Value Analysis (EVA), to support data-driven decision-making and project success.
